Membership

Become an Alpha

Membership in Alpha Phi Alpha is a lifelong commitment to leadership, service, scholarship and excellence. The Fraternity puts it plainly: it is not a title, it is a standard you uphold every day.

Before Anything Else

The General Organization asks a man to answer four questions honestly before he approaches a chapter at all. If the answer to any of them is no, the answer to the rest does not matter yet.

  • Are you already a leader in your community?
  • Are you committed to a lifetime of service and excellence?
  • Can you meet the Fraternity's expectations of you?
  • Can you carry the financial commitment?

The Fraternity's own summary of the point is worth repeating exactly: becoming an Alpha is not about what you gain, it is about what you are willing to give.

Alumni Eligibility

Epsilon Beta Lambda is an alumni chapter, so this is the route that applies here. A man seeking membership through an alumni chapter must:

  • Hold a four-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be of good character.
  • Be registered to vote.
  • Secure the sponsorship and recommendation of members of the chapter.

A man still in school seeks membership through a college chapter instead, which carries its own requirements — enrollment at an institution with an active chapter, a completed term, full-time degree-seeking status, and a minimum 2.5 grade point average.

The Next Step

The first step is a conversation. Write to the chapter, tell us something about yourself, and the Director of Membership Development will be in touch with what comes next and when.

Sponsorship comes from brothers of the chapter, so it begins with getting to know one another rather than with a form. You are welcome to write whether you are ready to begin or simply want to ask.

There Is No Pledging

Alpha Phi Alpha does not permit pledging. All membership intake runs through the Fraternity's official, certified process, coordinated by Corporate Headquarters.

Hazing is prohibited. Anyone who engages in it faces criminal liability as well as the discipline of the Fraternity. If you are asked for anything else by anyone claiming to represent a chapter, that person is not speaking for Alpha Phi Alpha.
