Alpha Esquires
A youth leadership program, preparing young African-American men for manhood, fatherhood and community responsibility.
The Program
Through educational programs, social seminars and community service, Alpha Esquires develops its members' natural leadership abilities. The organization holds no cultural, religious or political bias, and maintains a strong belief that a gathering of intellectual minds can change the outside perspective of the Black man.
The goal is straightforward: to help young African-American men increase their self-esteem, their confidence and their social skills.
Through educational programs, social seminars and community service, we will develop our natural leadership abilities and become the beacon of hope our grandfathers charged us to be.
Why Become an Esquire
- Life seminars and lectures at local churches, youth organizations, and secondary and post-secondary schools.
- College visits: exposure to a broader range of career role models, to the diversity among African Americans, and to the academic freedom to work out personal strategies for coping with what still pervades American society.
- Community service: involvement in community projects as experiential learning, so a young man understands a neighborhood's problems by standing in it.
- Study groups: aside from the camaraderie and the fellowship, declaring an intention to study with others, and knowing they depend on you, gives that intention strength.

What the Chapter Adds
Every graduating Alpha Esquire leaves with scholarship support. The chapter made that a rule rather than a hope: no young man finishes the program and walks into a tuition bill on his own.
The commitment is to the young man, not to the syllabus. When an Esquire's circumstances change, the chapter's Brother's Keeper program is what stands behind him — and it does not wait for a meeting.
Who Is an Alpha Esquire?
A young man who holds at least a 2.5 GPA and who, by high school graduation, will hold a 3.5 or better; who shows leadership potential; and who displays a common decency towards his elders and his peers.
Where It Runs
Alpha Esquires is hosted at Southwest High School in Macon, and the chapter intends to grow it into further schools as it is able to staff them.
Parents and students should write to the chapter; the message goes to the brother who runs the program.
Every graduating Esquire leaves with scholarship support.
